Doing research online is all well and good but nothing beats pen and paper. Have been developing an idea of creating an infographic detailing the deaths of UK Military Personnel in Afghanistan since our presence there in 2004. The main inspiration came from reading about the deaths of 2 soldiers on BBC News yesterday.
The BBC have also been compiling an interactive spreadsheet tracking the deaths of all UK Military Personnel, dating back to 2004. This has proved invaluable in my research.

My favourite infographics - This infographic was from a 2006 edition of Esquire magazine, detailing the cost of body parts on the black market. It’s simple and as a result, the reader can grasp the crux of the story in seconds.

My favourite infographics - Information Is Beautiful come second only to the Guardian in terms of quality of infographics. They are executed beautifully, are striking to look at and often stylistically represent the information they are trying to convey, like the one above.

How The Guardian turns data into a polished story.

Two Types of Data Visualisation and Understanding The Differences

Tom Steinberg explains the two types of data visualisation and why it is important to understand the difference between the two.

There are two types of data visualisation - answer and story. Answer visualisations serve to answer one question posed by a particular person and story visualisations act to tell a story to a given audience.

Mulling over potential infographic story ideas… have been looking at the National Statistics website, which is a goldmine of official data on subjects which matter to the public such as health, culture, economy, etc. Ideally want something newsworthy, which ties in with something already the subject of hot debate.
